University of Phoenix Supports Childhood Literacy with $5000 Donation to ...
University of Phoenix, the nation's largest private university, announced that it has donated 100,000 U.S. dollars to Boys & Girls Clubs across the country. Twenty local boys & Girls Clubs have been awarded a grant of $ 5,000 to support projects that make a significant contribution to literacy. Boys & Girls Club Sacramento received $ 5,000.
According to research from the National Center for Education Statistics, in 2003, 22 percent of Americans aged 16 and over classified as below basic literacy, meaning they had the skills the simplest.Thirteen percent were classified as above qualified, meaning they had the skills to conduct literacy activities complex and difficult. Funds from the University of Phoenix are designed to help the next generation learn a skill higher literacy.
"Literacy in children is an important step on the road to a life of learning and achievement," said University of Phoenix Sacramento Valley Campus Director, Scott Lewis. "We are delighted to support the Boys & Girls Club with their efforts to increase literacy among children in Sacramento."
"University of Phoenix has been an important partner of the Boys & Girls Club for years," said Maureen Price, CEO, Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Sacramento. "We are delighted that they share our passion for expanding children's literacy and we look forward to seeing the results of this gift will have on our children."
The grant was used in Sacramento in two parts. The first portion of the grant was used to buy school supplies for the day Literacy Club.At the event, 30 volunteers from the University of Phoenix Sacramento Campus leads children through a variety of reading and language arts activities. The remainder of the grant was used to update the reading rooms of the club in mural art and rugs to create a more welcoming environment for children to play in.
This effort is a continuation of the University of Phoenix's ongoing commitment to the Boys & Girls Clubs.Since September 2010, University of Phoenix University of Phoenix Foundation together have donated more than $ 700,000 and awarded 22 scholarships for full tuition Boys & Girls Clubs, in addition to the $ 100,000 designated for this initiative literacy.
