Spending the Second with Brahms

Who doesn’t have their own Arcadia, a place where peace mixes with simplicity?

For Johannes Brahms, Arcadia was three summers in Pörtschach, a town on Lake Wörth, some 340 kilometres south of Vienna. Dips at dawn. Crabs for dinner. Vistas of snow capped Carinthian mountains.

Against this idyllic backdrop emerged Brahms’s Second Symphony, composed in the space of four months in 1877 at the Schloss Leonstain where he’d booked two rooms in the housekeeper’s quarters.

“The melodies fly so thick here that you have to be careful not to step on one,” wrote Brahms of his summer sojourn.

Indeed, the symphony begins with lilting themes in three-quarter time, kind of like the waltzes that had made Johann Strauss Sr. and Jr. famous. But don’t try to waltz to Brahms’s Second. Not even if you have two left feet. Yes, the symphony’s opening is light, and, as the Austrians say, gemütlich. But Brahms goes far deeper than the Strausses in his rhythmic and metric explorations.

The same holds true for the slow second movement where Brahms adroitly keeps the metre off balance, just one way in which he pulls the listener further along. And if you dare second guess Brahms in any of the movements, including the Ländler and Galopp soaked third movement or the spirited final movement, you’ll be wrong pretty much every time. But that’s OK because Brahms holds many surprises in store for you.

Tonight, the National Academy Orchestra performs Brahms’s Second under guest conductor Alain Trudel in St. Christopher’s Anglican, 662 Guelph Line, Burlington.

Also on the bill, Aaron Copland’s Fanfare for the Common Man, and Beethoven’s Fifth Piano Concerto, nicknamed the Emperor. That sobriquet, by the way, doesn’t stem from Beethoven, nor does it refer to Napoléon, Empereur des Français, but perhaps rather to the work’s regal temperament. At the ivories will be none other than our local reigning ‘Empress of the Piano,’ Valerie Tryon.
