Study Finds Up To One Quarter of Accidents Caused by Distracted Driving
While Bill Murray reprimanded fur threat Punxsutawney Phil in the movie "Groundhog Day" not to "drive angry," a recommendation could be better not to drive stupid and forgetful.
According to research published last week by the Association of Governors Highway Safety (GHSA), distracted driving - which is most often use portable devices like cell phones - is now responsible for up 25 percent of car accidents in the United States. The stats were the result of a comprehensive summary of distracted driving research for state officials.The report, "distracted driving: What research shows and what states can do" research considered over 350 scientific articles published between 2000 and 2011.
The report defines distracted driving, how distractions can lead to crashes and recommends ways states can use to fight against the dangerous distraction.
"Despite everything that has been written about driver distraction, there are still many things that we do not know," said GHSA Executive Director Barbara Harsha, who oversaw the drafting of the report."Most of the research is incomplete or contradictory. Clearly, further studies should be made to meet both the scope of the problem and how to address effectively."
In addition to concluding that up to one quarter of accidents are caused by driver distraction, the report found that drivers are often distracted, as much as half the time they spend on the road. She also notes that while talking on handheld cell phone is an important factor leading to accidents, text messaging and driving is even more dangerous.
