Cosy on down in New Zealand's adventure capital
While New Zealand cities generally do not have a reputation as a center of nightlife, adventure capital of the South Island is an exception alive. Come to the annual season of snow and its bars, clubs and restaurants are jumping. Because there is no accommodation on the slopes, skiers descend on the most friendly base camps at the end of each day to warm up and hunker down.
My visit is just before the start of the season this year and the hotel's private historical Eichardt on Marine Parade on the shores of Lake Wakatipu, the staff prepares the terrace side.The chairs are draped wool throws, the radiators are ready to roar and the bartenders are putting the finishing touches on a list of drinks mid-winter, with nutritious concoctions that almost sound - say, a figure eight (Fig. -infused Bacardi rum and eight years stirred with orange bitters, Grand Marnier-soaked raisins and orange peel) and apple pie martini (apple with cinnamon crushed and shaken with vodka, liqueur green apple, apple juice and home-made apple pie bitter).
Fire warmed Hotel bar front is probably the best place in town to snuggle down and winter tapas menu has been introduced, including the likes of seared beef skewers marinated with paprika, salt and pepper-fried calamari with green herbs and garlic aioli and bacon and duck liver pate with cornichons and crostini. These snack items, available 4:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m., are representative of the bar scene Queenstown winter, it is not so much a pub crawl as a progressive party every night.
